The horizon is cluttered with ideas that seemed to be good ones, but which turn out to be terribly bad. Whenever we try to start from scratch, we find ourselves building on ruins and rubble. These works take a painted Renaissance square, which is said to make a perfect city. What else could the goal be? Nothing less!

The scene shuffles through the histories and ideas manifested in the façades of Tirana. The perspectives of the different buildings appear to align, but they actually never do. The sixteen panels are an exercise in layering and unlayering, composing and rearranging. They show different utopias forced onto the same playground.Once again, it is time to propose new rules, because the old ones no longer work.

Stefan Wirnsperger (*1985) is a visual artist who lives and works in Vienna. His recent paintings move between illusionistic surface imitation and the staging of semi-abstract scenes. The subjects are carefully composed scenarios that refer to collective processes. They range from urban structures and public sign systems to the characters of the Latin alphabet. He is primarily interested in how communication and ideas of identity develop within social structures and the aesthetic forms they take.

The exhibition is realized as part of Stefan Wirnsperger’s residency in Tirana within the framework of the Tirana–Salzburg Residency Program, initiated by the Province of Salzburg, with the support of the Austrian Embassy in Albania and Raiffeisen Bank.
