Judith Zillich | ICONS-LINES UNDER PRESSURE

Judith Zillich “ICONS-LINES UNDER PRESSURE”

September 15, 2023, 19:00 h

Judith Zillich comes to Tirana in the context of a month-long studio scholarship by the province of Salzburg, supported by the Österreichische Botschaft Tirana.

Up to her residency in Lwiw in Ukraine in 2018, Austrian artist Judith Zillich has been occupied with the abstraction of faces of orthodox icons. Eyes, nose and mouth are written like letters in the traditional painting of icons. In the technique of egg-tempera on paper, Zillich reduces or displaces the traditional signs in favour of telling fascinating stories: asexual heads focus the viewer, the child’s hand grabs into emptiness while a head of a mother handles with children’s arms…

The exhibition will remain open until September 24.

Judith Zillich was born in Graz in 1969, grown up in Salzburg, Austria. 1992 bis 1995 Studies in Philosophy at the University of Vienna; 1994 bis 2000 Studies of Art at the University for Applied Art in Vienna; 1998 Scholarship for the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, Paris; 2002 Year-long-Scholarship of Federal State of Salzburg; 2018 Scholarship for an Icon-Painting-School in Lwiw, Ukraine.
